Code: MOT-MCL-0002
Stiffness of Materials and Structures.
Benchâ€mounting apparatus enabling a variety of investigations into material stiffness.
Experiments
o Investigation of the stiffness in bending of different materials of the same crossâ€section
(Young’s modulus/stiffness)
o Investigation of the stiffness of a single material with different crossâ€section geometries
(second moment of area, or I value)
o Experiments to find the deflected shape of a beam and bending of a beam clamped at one
end (a cantilever).
o Comparison of a simply supported beam, a cantilever and an encastré beam.
o Experiments to find the relationship between angular deflection and the dimensional and
material properties of rods and tubes (torsional stiffness).
Specifications
Rigid metal frame with two adjustable knifeâ€edges (ie “frictionless” pivots, hence beam is
“simply supported”)
Max distance between knife edges = 400 mm
Back panel has a linear scale with 5 mm increments
Max loading on beam = 30 N
A dial indicator mounts magnetically on the back panel. It shows beam deflections up to
10mm at the point of loading in increments of 0.01 mm
Includes Vernier gauge
Fully adjustable feet
